View Full Version : Late arrivals and bowling
Had an inquiry this morning about this. I'll quote
I was just wondering whether the league has rules about players arriving late after work and then not being able to bowl for the same length of time as they were late? I think it would be quite petty if there were due to the fact that many people have to work Saturday's now as opposed to a few years ago. I would just like some clarification on this as we will have a guy tomorrow who will be about 45 minutes late.
Wondered if any of you guys have thoughts on this. Ive asked for a clarification from the league I'll post it as soon as I get it.
Response from league is as follows
This falls under the Laws of cricket;-
Law 2.
subsection 5. Fielder absent or leaving the field.
(iii) If he is absent for 15 minutes or longer, he shall not be permitted
to bowl thereafter until he has been on the field for at least that length
of playing time for which he was absent.
Hence if the opposition object he cannot bowl, until the correct time
has elapsed. However I do tend to agree with Michael that at our level
it seems a touch harsh, but as we know, there are many that would
be only to keen to enforce the letter of the law.
It is perhaps something he would like to bring to the attention of the
committee for the rules meeting later this year.
Fell free to add your thoughts

We have had three games this year where a player has arrived late once the oposition said he can bowl when he arrives but in the other instances the opposition have said that the player can not bowl until he has been off the field for the same amount of overs as he has missed. In the first game this meant he could not bowl until the 34th over!!! (this instance is what started this thread as we were not sure if it was a league rule or not) Luckily in the other game the player arrived at the start of the second over. We did not have a sub fielder in any of the games.

I agree. At our level it does seem a bit petty. If someone is an hour late they will not be able to bowl.
Maybe it should be a fixed 30 minutes however late they are.

This law only applies if a sub fielder is used i would think. We have had asituation this season where a player arrived late but as no sub was used felt there was no need to object. If the game has started and a player leaves the field for a prolonged period it could be applied in that instance but again i would think its quite harsh if no sub had been used
