Dos'nt sound like a bad idea to me, having said that we are one of the guilty ones who
failed to supply a team, but it may encourage players to make the effort? and why not be different!nothing ventered etc

Thats a very valid point which will need to be thought about,
and of course the sight screen (if clubs have them) as well

With regard to using white balls, I see one very minor point that has been overlooked and that is how many should you purchase at the start of the season? Think about it, you purchase a number of white balls and lets say you happen to go out in the first round, cricket balls deteriorate with time, and as has been pointed out, what happens if the ball is lost during the latter part of a game, does the fielding side suddenly get the benefit of a brand new ball because there are no spares!
I make these negative points to back up an idea I have, which would counter most arguements against the white ball, and that is the use of the now available bright orange cricket ball, (and not the rubber ones before somebody asks) with the backing of the league. This would allow these to be used with the agreement of both skippers at the start of overcast and dull days, (and lets face it there's plenty of days like that) you would build up a stock of spares, would not need to change sight screens and there is no need to wear coloured clothing. If say, you purchased 5 at the start of the season and you was unlucky enough to go out in the first round of the mid week cup, the remaining balls are very likely to be used through the season.
Just an idea.

sightscreens can be covered fairly cheaply in black material (bout£10 max) or not used!!

we discuused this at the leauge v high roding game yesterday and it was agreed that orange balls would be better. the point you make about using them in the league wasnt raised and does seem like a very good idea. Although the way this season has gone saturday would have been the 1st use of a red ball!!!
