As the 20 over cup competitions reach their climax, the dull and wet nights of May are a distant memory although some might be forgiven for thinking that they have now moved to Saturdays instead.
Having successfully negotiated round one of the Batchelor Cup Elsenham found themselves facing Newport in Round 2. Taking nothing away from a splendid knock by Dave Fletcher, Newports innings didn't finish until 7:40 p.m. By 8:40 p.m. the weather and gloom had reduced the match to a farce. Newport may have won in any event but the losing or winning of the toss was clearly pivotal to the outcome. In the interests of fairness can I propose the league considers a mandatorty 6.p.m. start ( or a 1 hour 15 minute timeframe ) and the inning closure at whatever point is 7:15p.m. The side bowling first would then receive the same amount of overs they had bowled in reply. The exceptions being teams all out obviously not limiting the overs for the side batting second. :-?
