Thank guys but in truth, the saying in web design is "Content is King" and its you lot that provide that so well done to everyone really...

As to other local sites, yes I have read some of the more aggressive threads and often cringe at the lack of moderation. When I was planning the site some years ago I was in two minds as to whether to have a forum or not because they can take a lot of time to moderate. In the end I decided to try it out and see how it goes. The only condition on you lot being that you have to provide a real name and club when you register to post. Other sites don't do that so posts are effectively anonymous.

Here we are three years later and I have only had to moderate one threead and that was because of an issue with a disciplinary meeting rather than the content. I also wrote a "terms of use" policy that outlined the way the site should be used. I have never had to publish it!!!

Once again thats credit to those that use the forums here. I think the nature of the debate and bantar here is a reflection of the way that most of us play the game on the field. Yes we do sledge but its mostly good natured and respectful of the oppo both young and old.

One reason I think the site works and the only thing I'll take credit for is the decision to keep all commercial related posts, banners, adds etc. off the site unless they are directly related to the league its sponsors or their activities. I've had to defend that stance on occasion and will continue to do so. Too many sites like this one are clutterd with useless links and adds that detract form the look and navigation of the site.

I enjoy hanging about on the site, and the time spent keeping it updated is a small price to pay and made all the more enjoyable by you lot participating. There is nothing worse than an online forum where you can almost see the tumbleweed blowing across the screen...

Potter, Andrew missed the .htm off the link he posted so it will not load an easy error, your web browsere will not show it if it dosent need to, so heres the link to their message boards ESSEX CRICKET MESSAHE BOARDS (http://www.essexcricket.org.uk/messages.htm) You can find the threads for yourself I wouldn't want to post a direct link as I know some of the guys in question 8-)

Try searching for a few of the terms in Andrews post. Also HECL makes a good search there.

I dnt get wat u mean by HECL makes a good search there :-? Hmm see what u mean!!!

When I searched there for HECL earlier on in the year there was some debate about the relative merits of different league websites. Ours came out on top. It would seem that the forum software they are using drops old messages. I'll see if I can find a cached version somewhere.

Here's a quote from the thread that has expired on their forum that I was talking about. Found it in an old online cahce,. Yes it is possible to trace stuff online that you thought had gone forever!!! It made me smile at the time. Little do they know, but well they only have to ask!!!!!

Although the Essex league website contains a awful lot of information and the person who does it (George Salmon) must put a load of hard work into it I wonder what people would think of it being in a similar format to the Herts and Essex Cricket League hecl.co.uk and for that matter Upminsters and Hornchurchs where a content manager is used. I reckon after the initial setup it could save a lot of time and agro trying to find what you are after.

The Hert & Essex website is very good, but would also be very expensive with a lot of people involved, the format is also very good and efforts will be made to try and run the Essex League site in the same way. Old information that is no longer required will be removed, but no doubt someone will say they wanted to keep that article etc. Keep viewing the site at essexcricket.com along with the 211,000 plus that have viewed since April 2005 and the changes will take place over time.</P> :-D

Yes, High Beach v South Loughton in Div 2 on Sat.

I'd like to reiterate the thank yous to Paul. As for the question of whether we're developing a sense of community, I think the online version reflects the on-the-field attitude of most clubs in our league. I know a few other posters here are, like me, regular readers of the message board on the Essex county website and I'm continually amazed at the level of abuse, snide rumour and hearsay dressed up as hard fact dished out by members of Shepherd Neame League clubs. Whether that's the arrogance that comes from playing in a 'superior' league or just the fact that so many of the players involved in it are complete ****holes, I don't know.

If anyone's interested, go to www.essexcricket.org.uk/messages and find the thread entitled Walthamstow 4th XI on page 3. I'd like to think that this kind of stuff would never appear on our site, for the simple reason that the behaviour it refers to (a player sledging a 13-year-old by saying he hopes his mother dies of AIDS) would not be tolerated on the pitch.

Andrew, you are not wrong, having read alot of the threads, there really are some idiots in the Shepherd Neame league, if they are not slating Hornchurch and their paid players, it is threads about sledging, as you say, and some of them think it is all justified as well, saying that it makes them a man!! I find it brightens up my mornings at work!!! As for the website, it is excellent, keep up the good work Paul

I just wanted to say an official thank you to Paul for his efforts on this site. I for one am enjoying meeting opposing players who have posted on this site and continuing the debate.

Heaven help us, are we developing a sense of community?
