As some of you will have noticed I have zero'd the web link count for two clubs. However popular they maybe I know we didn't have 300 unique visitors to the site last night so the count cannot be true ;-).

The idea of having a count is to let you know how many people are visiting your site via this one. I will continue to zero the count if it continues. Sorry to be a killjoy but thats the way it is. :-D

If you want to tell everyone how great the site is or comment on other websites in the links section you can do so by visiting the Club links page and posting comments/ratings there.

Yep, I'm afraid so - but - just clicking through to link sites also messes up our google ranking and could get us black listed by several search engines and "bots".

Ive had to reset the count for several of the club links. Once again people have been repeatedly clicking through to raise the position of the club in the ranking. You know who you are, (and so do I 8-) ). If it continues I shall have to remove the count altogether.

Sorry to be a spoil sport but as I have said, repeatedly clicking on the links serves no purpose other than to mess up our Google search ranking and get us banned from certain search engines, not to mention costing us extra bandwidth.

This is a final warning. If people cannot refrain from clicking through the links section on the site the web links will be removed. I am prepared to remove individual club links first in an attempt to keep the links section online. If that fails it's gone.

One club has had their link removed from the site after ignoring requests made here.

If your really want to know who is clicking through repeatedly I can show you the logs that the server generates. I can assure you it is not someone from another club. I can also assure you that the same person is responsible for clicking repeatedly on another clubs link to raise their profile, that link remains on the site.

You are welcome to speak to you members and I would be more than happy to reinstate your club link once the situation is understood. However the situation remains that I have explained why this action has had to be taken. I don't consider it my responsibility to contact clubs or individuals to ask them to refrain from abusing the site. I am happy to spend time and effort keeping the site updated and will continue to do so for the benefit of all clubs and the league. I will continue to post in the forums about issues such as this if necessary.

Just so it is clear. I have asked people not to repeatedly click on their club link for several reasons.

It has a possible negative effect on our google search ranking.
It can effect the way the site is listed on ALL search engines.
It can get us black listed by certain search bots and search engines.
It costs the league in bandwidth which at the moment costs money.
It has generated complaints sent to me from several clubs.

I'm sorry if you don't like the way Ive handled the situation but thats the way it is. Please guys, as with everything to do with the league and the clubs in it, this site is run and maintained willingly for free. The only cost is the server space and bandwidth we use.

Thanks for your co-operation now and in the future.

Sorry Bearski, as far as I am concerned the matter is now closed. If it continues I will deal with it then. No one from ASP has been clicking through since the last request was posted. The next solution is to remove the links from the front page. Hopefully that wont be needed.

ALL links are now listed alpahabetically. Once there are more than 10 links in the link section I shall change them so they list randomly on the homepage. I still want to keep a count of the total clicks as I hope that it will help us when we negotiate sponsorship and advertiseing in coming seasons.

Do, however, keep the informal league table of member registrations going!

I wish as much effort went into heading that count. It would make a difference to both the league and the website

Agreed, even those of us using the play-cricket.com system can access information on site traffic if we want to. Listing links alphabetically is fine. Do, however, keep the informal league table of member registrations going!

PS: Maybe remove the number of hits from the entries on the Club Links page?

Hi Paul,
I don't know what everyone else thinks, but I would suggest just taking the count off, but leaving the links. Fundamentally, they should be there for everyone to be able to get to the league's club websites, however, if those clubs want ot know their own visitor stats, then surely they should just implement their own counter. As we have seen, it is open to abuse, although why this should be I have no idea, we all have our websites and we're proud of them ,but faking count hits wouldn't make me feel any better about my site.

Thats just my thoughs anyway... by the way, White Roding site has been updated over the weekend with the last couple of match reports and photos from our summer ball. WRCC (http://freespace.virgin.net/ginster.pies/)

cheers,

Andy

I have no idea how Aspenden got from bottom to top today, normally it's me or the Saturday skipper who has a few clicks, but i've been playing today and our skipper is in New York, so perhaps it is someone else clicking through and trying to get people off the website. Maybe just have the links without any counts? :-?

I would like to know who is clicking through for Aspenden, if you can tell me that would be great, as i will exercise sanctions against them, you can e-mail me on mstrange@plasmon.co.uk as not to embarrass the culprit!!!!
