View Full Version : How is the website doing??
So the site is now one season old. Its been an an enjoyable experience from my point of view keeping the site updated etc. Apart from a few gremlins early on things seem to have gone fairly smoothly and I look forward to keeping some sort of impetus going through the close season.
I thought I'd also check out all your thoughts on how things have been from the users perspective and ask for all your comments and suggestions on how to improve on what we have.
What would you like to see included?
What can be cut?
What could be improved?
Anything really, the site is here for league members so lets have your thoughts.
Finally thanks to all those that have visited the site regularly, to those that have contributed match reports, and to everyone who has posted in the forum. Without your efforts this site would have been an empty uninteresting place to visit.
Thanks to you all.
1. I would like to see scorecards from the games. These would not necessarily have to be posted by Monday morning, but during the week would be good. I don't think it should be too much hardship for teams to provide this, whether input online or sent physically. I would also like to encourage more match reports.
Scorecards would be great as would be more match reports. The match reports seem to have died off in the last few weeks. I'm not really sure why. I could produce a form that would submit full scorecards, the downside to this would be that it would be time consuming for people to fill them in. Also if they are submitted physically it's more work for me to post them. In principle I'm all in favor. I would think it would need a volunteer from each club to agree to submit them regularly. I'll sound this out at the AGM.
2. The forum debates have been very healthy. They show that there are plenty of issues still for the Committee to consider. It is not clear to me how these issues are effectively taken forward by the Committee for consideration and perhaps a formal method of doing this on the website can be introduced. This could ensure that sensible and well debated issues get formally proposed are not lost in the ether - people could actually what had been formally proposed for the Committee had to consider.
I'm not exactly sure how to achieve this. As it stands topics for debate with regards rule changes have to be submitted to the relevant league representative and seconded by another club. The minutes of meetings that discuss the committee conclusions are then posted on the website. Any ideas on how to streamline this procedure on the site would be welcome.
A while back I asked whether every club had at least one member signed up and you replied that you would post this information. I think this is really important as the debates we've been having are largely participated in by members of around a dozen clubs. When it comes to the AM, I don't really want reps from clubs which have taken no part in discussing important issues saying they didn't know about them and possibly swinging votes one way or the other. What about it being a condition of league membership that at least one member must be registered on the site?
Yes I did say I would post the info. In my defense I've been a bit busy but will try and get it posted soon. Most clubs do have at least one registered user. How often they check in is another matter. I think one answer is to push the website next season. As to making it a requirement that each club should have an (elected?) member responsible for monitoring debate on the site. I think this is a very good Idea. I can set up a "group membership" for just such a purpose. They could then act as filter for individual clubs view point. I'll also run this by the committee at the next meeting.
Most of the points here so far rely on individuals giving a bit of time to help the greater cause. Lets hope we can get some people involved. I'm always willing to listen if help is offered.
TAFF, Due to your highly insulting comments aimed in my direction you are hence forth to be known as TAFFLON so everyone in the league will now be aware of your keeping abilities not just those in division six. Why, shouldn't we share the joke with everyone   You now have to log on using TAFFLON as your username. Don't forget to sleep with one eye open on tour this week your roomy is not best pleased with your purile attitude!!!! :-P :-P
What particular prickly thorns are you hoping to find. Just check under your sheets before you retire you never know where you might find things in Somerset!!!
Jelski,
how about being able to upload jpgs to the site im sure there are some good pics out there of cricketing moments at all clubs that would be worth seeing...........
Uploading images is an option, but they take up quite a bit of space and bandwidth unless they are "crunched" properly. I'll look into setting up a Gallery next week when we get back from tour. In the meantime if you want jpgs attached to match reports send then to me via email and I'll do what I can. The same goes for scorecards. I've been asked recently if they can be included. If there is enough call for it I'll try and accomadate. It is after all "Your" site.
No need to SHOUT. We can hear you!!

I'd just like to say how good the site is. There isn't really anything that could be cut and I think it covers all bases. The forum is excellent and is a regular topic of discussion at my club, showing how many of our members access the site regularly. There are plenty of articulate and intelligent users and the level of debate has been high.

HI,
I agree that scorecards would be great, however, it does require a firm commitment from everyone involved, otherwise it becomes a bit pointless. NOt sure what the best way to do it is - althoguh I don;t think that sending physical scorecards in is fair on our esteemed webmaster. If we as clubs want scorecards, we'd have to be responsible for posting them. Some sort of online form would be best, I guess, w=but we'd have to decide how best to implement it. also would have to consider if the scorecards are just going to stand alone, or if we're going to use them produce averages etc. for the league. alot of work I admit, but it mgiht persuade more people to get the scorecards in ( you would also then have a database of all league players, which may be useful in future).
I think the problem with match reports, is that a lot of clubs produce an internal match report, which utiltises nicknames, in jokes, and a fair amount of mickey taking. As we've seen, all of this can cause offence if posted to the geenral public, hence clubs don;t bother. I know that this is why I keep the White Roding one off here ( its also been off the club website as well recently, but thats because someone "borrowed" my laptop :-( a few weeks back!)
As far as debated topics go. It might be as simple as this: if a debate on here leads to a proposal being made, then a copy of the debate thread could be made and emailed to the club reps as the weekly results sheet is at present. This would mean that clubs had a record of what had been discussed even if they haven't read the website.
cheers,
Andy
oh yeah, and I forgot to add taht I think the site is excellent. Well done paul, keep up the good work!! 8-)

Paul,
I think the site has been a great way for players in the league to keep up-to-date with results and issues in HECL and provided a good informal forum for some well considered debate. A definite improvement in the quality of life!
Some thoughts for the future:

This is the first time I have logged in for a while as I was wondering why the website chat was so quiet I now know! I am afraid it is very difficult to naviagate and I am sure it must be putting people off.
Its a shame really as in previous years there was some interesting and lively debate and now nothing. Not being technically minded I have no answers for improvement.
