This is just a general thread to see how everyone thinks the umpiring has been so far at the half way stage?
We have had a pretty good time of it so far with one exception. I just feel and the rest of the team did as well, that a captain needs to be sure that who ever he sends out to umpire knows the rules fully, when they dont problems tend to arise.
How has everyone else found it?

I think that the umpiring has been ok in div 2 this year in most games people have been pretty fair. When your team mates are at the other end you have to walk otherwise if you cheat you make your mate look a cheat also. The thing is you know which teams don't give decisions even if they are clearly out and it definatly makes think twice before giving a close decision

As someone who does a fair bit of umpiring (cheers bully) ive found the attitude a lot better in the main...problems do arise when people dont know or understand the laws and the captains should only try and put people out who are happy umpiring (hence my 22 over stints!!)...but the big thing that helps everyone is honesty from batsmen...it was very good to see dunnmow's young lad Jack (sorry dont remember surname) walk on saturday for a feather nick when the umpire wasnt sure if he hit it. he could have easily stood but showed great honesty. it set a great example to everyone else playing.

I to have found myself doing a lot of umpiring this year and everything has, been fine making for some good games of cricket.
I have only had the displeasure of 1 team that when the bowler had fired 1 down leg for the 3rd time in the 1st two overs and after given the 3rd ball wide (everyone should get a little slack at the start of their spell) the captain setting a great example to the young lads in his team would stand there starring at the umpire with hands on hips shaking his head and then at the end of that over would walk up and look at the pitch still shaking his head this carried on for every wide that day with one of the young bowlers getting in on the act quoting spirit of the game don’t worry I have to umpire yet in the same breath.
Now I’m standing at square leg the same thing for our other umpire he gives a wide and is questioned on the spot "how can you give that wide" nice and loud for all the young lads in the team to hear a great example again.
Now this is a classic opening bat steps down the track and drives the ball over mid on for 6 we watch the ball sail into the gardens I signal 6 turn around to see the wicket keeper (old guy number 2) stating that the batsmen while hitting 6 off his front foot has knocked 1 bail off ?
now there is only 1 person on the pitch that said he saw the bail fall on the floor as the batsmen hit the 6 and he was standing at deep fine leg, from this the wicket keeper has given the batsmen out told him he had to go and was pointing him back to the clubhouse. As the standing umpire I asked my square leg if he see it and the answer was no I explained that it had to be the wind as hitting 6 of the front foot and hitting the bails at the same time would be a miracle. "Not out play on please Gentlemen"
Wicket keeper “don’t be stupid there is not enough wind to blow the bails off” and still stands behind the batsmen telling him he should walk, yet in the next over from my end the bails were blown off 3 more times. Not a single sorry.
Now I know if this was my club we would be up to Bishop Stortford for a good old wrist slapping
I ask you all Should I be making the league aware of this or should the members of that club who read this just have a quite word with the wiser old gentlemen in their club that are looking out for the younger club members in their 2nd team to try and play the game as it should be and not question the umpires and should not try to give batsmen out themselves as this can only lead to bad habits for the younger lads.
Sorry had to get that of my chest and if anyone would like to discuss my email is Jeremy.rose1@ntlworld.com (Jeremy.rose1@ntlworld.com).
On a positive note the young lad batting at 5 who batted all the way to the end with a great 50 well done super knock
