Even though Woodford Wells' second ground is small, I was amazed at the details of their game v Braughing with more than 750 runs scored. In general, I suspect it's good batsmen against less good bowlers playing on decent tracks on grounds with relatively short boundaries. We've already broken our club record total this season (340 v Henham) and across our two Saturday league XIs have recorded nine centuries.

Don't know about hitting across the line... You might remember our ground from last season: the river is a massive straight hit over the boundary. Legend has it that only once in 66 years has a shot actually ended up in the river, and that was one of the Alleyne brothers playing for Haringey Cricket College before they turned pro. Well, the ball has reached the bushes on the riverbank twice already...

Is it me or are there some big scores being posted this season?, over 400 by Woodford Wells and 350 in reply from Braughing, a few more scores over 270 etc. What does everyone think is the crux of the matter, (A)some very good batsmen in the 5 divisions,(B) the bowling not being as good as the batting,(C) small boundaries, (D)better pitches, (E) playing in decent weather!!!!!. Just interested in people's views.

Andrew, i think you are right, we have three people averaging over 100 in the league this year, no centuries yet but we have chased most of the time. I think the short boundaries thing is a bit of a myth though, our ground is pretty small but we never have a mountain of runs scored on it, our pitch(when dry) is playing pretty well as well(although some teams are bound to disagree!!!). I think people get into their heads that because the boundaries are small you need at least 250, and also try and flay the ball to the short boundary generally hitting across the line and getting out. We have had nowhere near our best bowling attack out this season at home and the most we have conceded is 176.

Maybe it is the "pyramid" effect. Successful England - Successful Village cricket?
Maybe it is the weather - wet at the start of the season, then bakingly hot?
Maybe it is the ball? Isn't it a new ball this year? Harder? Swings/turns less (though from the mystery ball I received on Saturday I doubt that :-P)
